The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is Scotland’s largest and oldest independent marine science organisation, delivering marine science for a productive and sustainably managed marine environment through innovative research, education and engagement with society.

Sharing a campus with the European Marine Science Park, SAMS’ marine research and teaching portfolio is diverse in topic and discipline, global in outlook, project locations and relevance, and delivered by a highly skilled team working in partnership with academic, business, government, regulatory, voluntary and civic society colleagues.

Exceptional talent on your doorstep

Graduates from SAMS receive an unrivalled marine science education including practical field experience, strong laboratory skills and the experience of working with research leaders.

UNDERGRADUATE

As Scotland’s premier independent marine research organisation, the Scottish Association for Marine Science teaches three undergraduate courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Marine Science
  • BSc (Hons) Marine Science with Arctic Studies
  • BSc (Hons) Marine Science with Oceanography and Robotics 

With a multi-disciplinary programme, students are equipped with a diverse knowledge and skills base.  Being integrated into the research environment, students gain hands-on experience and grow their networks from the beginning of their studies. 

POSTGRADUATE

Postgraduate students are a vital component of the life and activities at SAMS. Two options for Masters-level study are currently offered:

  • Masters in Aquaculture, Environment and Society  
  • MRes Algal Biotechnology, Biology and Ecology 

An MSc by research can also be undertaken.

With approximately 25 PhD students at the cutting edge of research and innovation, the doctoral students make a valuable contribution to the cluster.
